Those great classic NES, SNES and Atari games we all like a lot are becoming pretty old. Nearly all are over 20 years old and several weren't too well cared for by their original owners. Cartridge games work with metal connectors and over time those connectors oxidize and turn into unusable. The good news is most cartridge games works by incorporating simple cleaning techniques.

Method #1 Q-Tips and Alcohol. Because of this technique you may need q-tips and alcohol. Dilute the alcohol with water it use a half and half mixture of water and alcohol. Some people state that you should utilize distilled or purified water I've not found out that as a result any real difference in cleaning the cartridge. Go ahead and take q-tip and dip it inside the alcohol then move it up and down across the metal contacts in the cartridge. Then take a dry q-tip and dry out the alcohol inside the same pattern. In the event the q-tip looks dirty then do it again before q-tip is relatively clean.

Method #2 WD-40 or Audio/Video Cleaner. Some cartridges have oxidized to the point where the above mentioned technique will not work. So we need to try something a tad bit more harsh. Instead of alcohol we will grab a can of audio/video head cleaner or WD-40. Spray a small amount in to the cartridge let it take a few momemts for the chemicals to consider effect. Then consider the q-tips and dry out the contacts again going up and down each metal contact.

Method #3 The Eraser. I have not had to make use of this method because so many games will work with all the above two techniques. However, some swear that works and i also aren't seeing it doing any damage so I'll include it. With this technique you'll need a small Security Bit screwdriver (you can find them on ebay) plus a rubber eraser. First you'll have to open the cartridge using the screw driver and sign up for the circuit board from inside. Now slowly move the eraser along over each metal contact. Clean away any left eraser residue. The idea here's how the eraser will behave as an abrasive agent and remove some oxidation from your contacts without damaging your metal.
